It may have been 33 years since it came back on TV, but popular television show Ramayan is now here to stay. The mythological show has set a world record by becoming the highest viewed entertainment program, not just in India, but globally.
DD National took to Twitter to declare the television show’s new position. “Rebroadcast of Ramayana on Doordarshan smashes viewership records worldwide, the show becomes most watched entertainment show in the world with 7.7 crore viewers on 16th of April,” it said.
In hopes of helping people get through the nationwide lockdown, Ramayan was brought back to TV screens in March. The epic drama features Arun Govil as Ram Dipika Chikhlia Topiwala as Sita, Sunil Lahri as Laxman and Dara Singh as Hanuman. Written and directed by Ramanand Sagar, Ramayan gained a cult status after first airing on Doordarshan
back in 1987. The show completed its rerun on April 18.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, all shoots for TV shows and films have been stalled indefinitely. The classics shows like Dekh Bhai Dekh, Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai, Office Office and mythological show Mahabharat also returned to the small screen.
